Synopsis

This review is from: Thor: God of Thunder (Video Game) Chris Hemsworth is on the cover, but the game is not bound to the movie. This game has fun, SNES genre platformer feel. It takes a couple levels to remember all button combinations for Thor’s different moves, but once you grasp them, the combos you can perform are satisfying (e.g. flying into the air with an enemy on your hammer, giving them a wallop in midair, then crashing their bodies down on the ground.) The levels and character designs can get repetitive. From world to world, you are fighting the same basic 5 baddies with maybe a color or armor cosmetic change. The end bosses make up for it all. Bosses are HARD. You need to use every skill in your arsenal and not waste a millisecond in your attacks. Seeing bosses that are two screens tall overpowering Thor is pretty fun. Being able to customize your skills with runes is a fun idea, but limited. When you add a rune, you need to subtract another. The story is remedial, but let’s be honest, you are not playing this game for the plot. I would recommend buying this used. Seriously, terrible movie games are a dime a dozen, but when a movie tie-in video game comes out that is actually good, it’s like a celestial phenomena. Well, with the DS version of Thor, it seems the gods themselves shined their lights and made way for such a celestial phenomena on this one, because it is one of the best movie games I’ve played in years (it’s right up there with Spider-Man 2 and Batman: The Video Game for the NES in terms of awesome super-hero movie games). If you’re wondering why or how this game possibly turned out the way it did when even the 360/PS3 versions were among the worst titles released in 2011, it’s because a different developer handled the making of the game. The people behind this version is WayFoward Technologies, who you might recognize for their work on games such as Contra 4, the amazing Shantae series (seen on GBC and its universally praised sequel on the DS, the awesome Wii-make/reimaging of A Boy and His Blob, and the recent Aliens Infestation. If you’re familiar with any of their work, the quality of this game shouldn’t be a surprise. If anyone could do a movie tie-in game well, it’s these guys. In truth, this is a “tie-in” in the loosest sense of the word. It’s more of a prequel set within the specific universe of the Thor movie, so it takes a lot of liberties. A lot of villains and races show up in the game that were never shown in the movie, for instance. In all honesty, the story is minimal, at best, and it is only here to excuse all of the beat-em-up action that will ensue in your playtime. No, the story is not a strong-point here, but it’s adequate and fulfills its purpose fine. The sound design is also, like the story, adequate, but nothing special. The sound effects are exactly what you’d expect from a beat-em-up starring a thunder god, and the music is decent, but entirely forgettable. It’s average quality, but when you consider it’s a movie game, it’s slightly above-average in that context. What *is* a definite strong point in this game is the art design and implementation of said design. Rather than be a straight-up Norse fairy tale like the comics, there’s more sci-fi flare added. I really love the art direction and concepts added in the movie, so this didn’t bother me one bit. A lot of famous Thor heroes and villains make an appearance, and they’re all re-imagined in the same sci-fi fantasy mix up. The settings, the character models, the fluid animation, it all screams high quality and attention to detail. Animations are incredibly smooth and expressive. Character models have lots of personality and detail. The settings and background vistas are downright majestic and epic. I’m really impressed at the art design in this game. This is fantastic quality for any game, period, and for a movie game, it’s astounding. Spectacular presentation is one of WayFoward’s calling cards, and they really “laid the hammer down” (so to speak The gameplay in Thor: God of Thunder, is your standard side scrolling beat-em-up, with simple, intuitive controls that are super fun and addictive.
