A great collection of sports games, good controls and solid 3D, October 10, 2011

Deca Sports Extreme brings the sports mini games action to the 3DS. Mini games get a bad rap but they work perfectly for the DS and 3DS because they are meant to kill time. They aren’t meant to be epic console experiences. They are supposed to make your trip from point A to point B seem faster then it normally would. In that case, Deca Sports Extreme delivers on all fronts. Its mini-game selection is solid, its fun, it looks good, it plays good and the 3D is overall decent. But the 3D varies from game to game, much like the mini games themselves, some are a little more fun then others. It depends mostly on your taste. Another thing is the 3D effect serves some sports better then others. Let me break it down:

Tennis: My personal favorite from the game, it plays very nice, looks very nice and the 3D effect works excellent with the game.
Basketball: The mini-game itself is basketball arcade fun, controls well with some cool powerups. The 3D effect is a little harsh, I found myself turning it down
Sumo Wrestling: I couldn’t get into this too much, the 3D is good but you’ll find yourself wanting to tilt the 3DS or your head to match the direction your pushing your opponent, that’ll lose you the 3D effect, I turned it totally off.
Trampoline: Surprisingly alot of fun, its a Dance Dance Revolution style match the button combination game, the better you do, the more tricks your character pulls off, the more points he gets, I found it far more addicting then I thought I would. 3D effect works very well.
Sport Blowgun: The most interactive mini-game. This makes use of the microphone…you line up the shot, then blow into the mic to shoot the Blowgun. On the original DS Lite this would have been alot nicer, the 3DS mic is located off to the lower right hand side of the second screen. It makes blowing and watching the top screen, difficult. It also makes the 3D effect, which looks nice when steady, go crazy because of the angle you’ll be looking at the upper screen. 3D should be set off for this one. I couldn’t get into it…thoughtful idea though.
Bowling: Another great one with good 3D effect. This plays like most arcade style bowling games, fun quick and easy to pickup
Soccer: Much like Basketball a good arcade style soccer game with good controls, 3D effect is a little better on this one though.
Snowmobile Racing: The 3D Effect was good but the racing itself was way too shallow for me, even for an arcade title, it may be called Snowmobile Racing but it plays like Mario Kart with dull tracks and bland powerups. Controls well but its a very throwaway game, probably my least favorite in the set.
Ice Hockey: Again much like Soccer and Basketball…great arcade style fun with good controls and a good 3D effect.
Snowball Fight: They actually try to make this sports like…its played 2 on 2, you are trying to hit the other players to stun them while avoid being stunned, avoid or knockdown barriers and take your opponents “FLAG” to your side to win. Everything about it works yet I found myself uninterested after just a few minutes. Good 3D effect too, just couldn’t get into the game.

All the games have powerups, you unlock many of them as you play. You assemble a TEAM of 4 players, you can level them up as you play on. Assign different powerups for different games, unlock customizable options for your avatar (very Mii like avatars). Overall a solid fun title that does what it should, be fun and pass time. To me thats what handheld systems are all about.

My 4-star review is pretty dependent on the price. It’s a good game, but not a great game. But it is worth the discounted price. Here’s a quick review of the various games.

Tennis: Great 3D demo, fun game.
Basketball: Also very good.
Sumo Wrestling: Not bad. Fun to check out, but gets old quickly.
Trampoline: Better than you would think. And a good demo of the 3D function.
Sport Blowgun: Eh. The way you have to hold/use the 3DS to work this game makes it a problem to “dial in” the 3D.
Bowling: Great basic bowling game. Thumbs up.
Soccer: Basically the same game-style as basketball and ice hockey, which is a good thing.
Snowmobile Racing: Looks good, but gets old quickly.
Ice Hockey: Plays like basketball and soccer, probably my favorite of the 3. Great game.
Snowball Fight: Eh. This one feels like they just wanted to throw in something else.

The game usually runs around . I personally think it’s worth it for . Some of the games may be pretty throw-away, but there is enough here to make it worth the price.
