Gameplay
What if you were given the challenge to maneuver a race car through a flaming hoop, say 20-30-40 feet up in the air. Think you could do it? What if it had to be done with balloons? Or perhaps using so many variables that it looks like a Rube Goldberg machine? Of course this is a pretty ridiculous request, but assuming the suspension of everyday reality and belief, and an assortment of malleable if unlikely objects, could you make it happen? This is the crux of Create. Consisting of a large series of puzzle challenges tending towards the outrageous, players must use their imaginations and objects provided or already part of their in-game possessions to succeed. With success comes additional items that can be used in later endeavors, if not ruled out by the challenge at hand. Challenges are set within a variety of base game worlds that can also be customized using an in-game toolset. Creations can also be saved, reused, edited and even shared with others online. These can also then be reedited for additional use.

This is more of a toy than a game. There’s a lot of puzzles and as you go through them they become more challenging. The fun part is that there is no time limit to solving the puzzles. You can try a lot of different things to try and get the most points and/or the best solution to the puzzle. Something that isn’t really mentioned is the other stuff that Create offers. Besides solving fun puzzles, you can also paint, draw, create landscapes, animations, and your own levels for the puzzles. You can also play with the objects just to see what everything does and the crazy things you could make. When you start off you get a limited amount of stuff for the challenges. However as you solve the puzzles, more objects become available to you depending on how you do. Between the 150 puzzles, the level creator, and all the different objects to play around with, it’s really hard to get bored. My hubby who also tried the demo, had a ton of fun playing with the different objects. Good thing he has his own computer so we can each play the game. This review is from: Create (DVD-ROM) Just a preface, we have the old Incredible Machine game which has been “Incredible” as it has held the interest of my 4 boys (now 6,9,11,13) for many years. That is indeed a marvel since it’s graphics are dated and will run on virtually any PC from 1998 on. This was suppose to be a modern version of this type of game. It is but the interface is not intuitive and doesn’t make effective use of the mouse IMHO (probably because this is also available for console systems). It is very hard to grasp what to do initially (as the other review states) but you slowly figure it out. Maybe with more play it will be easier but the designers could learn a few things from the old Incredible Machine game. Also of note is that it will install in XP but will not run, until you manually install MS dotnet 3.5 (I found this out after some googling and it is on the game designers web forums). My 9 year old, 6 year old and I each have our own ‘world’ that we are working on. The 6 year old is the most independent of us and can come up with some real humdinger results. He is constantly assisting his big brother! I do step in when they get stuck, but not as often as you would think. This game comes and goes in fashion at our house. It is a real treat when someone puts it in and we get excited about opening up new levels again. |
