This review is from: APB Reloaded [Game Connect] (Software Download) First of all, the game is great in a lot of places. Graphics, for one, are more than decent. The cars actually get bashed up in the places where they got hit. HDR blooming is nice. Best of all, it’s not graphically intensive. I’m getting 50, 60 fps at full HD with max graphics on a GTX 260M (comparable to a desktop GTX 9800). Character and vehicle customization is UNBELIEVABLY MIND-BLOWING. You have to see it to believe it. Clothing is also unbelievably customization. There’s literally no end to what you can look like (except for fat chicks. The developers apparently have a “no fat chicks” rule). As to that one-star review… A controller would make this game (remember, this IS a shooter) a nightmare to play. The default controls are similar to most shooters, mapped nicely around the WASD keys. The only things I changed was making zoom a toggle instead of a hold and mapping grenade to the middle mouse button. Driving, however, IS badly implemented. The cars have no grip and there’s a slight delay between your input and the server actually responding. You must constantly drift around corners at all but a snail’s pace, and all cars have a tendency to fishtail. What makes this game less-than-perfect is the unbalanced weapons. Premium weapons give a definite and marked advantage (much higher rate of fire/accuracy, running with a sniper rile – you can’t run with most sniper rifles, etc) over the free weapons that are purchased using in-game currency. Though there is a freemium model similar to TF2/Planetside 2′s system, where all purchasable weapons can be acquired for free in-game, it is nowhere as easy to do so. Also, most in-game (and real money) purchases are leases instead of permanent ownership – most in-game purchases expire in 10 days, and depending on how much you pay, real money purchases expire in 3, 7, or 30 days. You have to either keep playing (to rack up enough in-game currency to continue leases) or keep dumping real money into the game to keep your weapons. Though permanent ownership of weapons are available, they are prohibitively expensive (at least from my perspective), costing at around – each. I’ve heard a lot of people complain about APB being a pay-to-win game. A note on the mechanics of the game – the damage dealt does not vary across the body. Two shots to your foot is the same as two shots to your head. Also, though character height can be adjusted in customization, the hitbox does not change. However, one can understand why the hitbox does not change – else shorter characters would have an advantage over larger characters. But the lack of differential damage in different zones is perplexing for such a relatively modern game. All and all, you’ll get a lot of eye candy from APB. Pretty sweet eye candy, too.
