Too much talking., February 13, 2011
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sesame Street: Cookie’s Counting Carnival (Video Game)

This is my 3 year old’s first DS game. He finds the game fun and is excited to play.

But he gets frustrated because sometimes the characters talk too much during the games. He will repeatedly tap the correct answer but it doesn’t register because they are talking. By the time they are done talking he is on to tapping wrong answers. Since his answers aren’t acknowledged he thinks he is choosing the wrong ones.

Good for young children, December 26, 2011
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sesame Street: Cookie’s Counting Carnival (Video Game)

My 5 year-old son is mildly autistic and has been working on learning to write/recognize numbers and strengthen his counting skills. He seems to like this game a lot, it holds his attention longer than most games. It comes with a stylus holder that makes the stylus the size of a normal pen. The game provides enough verbal instruction for young kids to play it independently and definitely provides a variety of mini-games to strengthen your child’s skills related to counting and recognizing written numbers. Besides a few quirks noted below, my only real problem with the game is that it’s a bit long-winded/repetitive with the intro and instructions, and it doesn’t allow you to skip them or start/continue the game before it’s finished. This is especially annoying when you’re playing the games like Ring Toss and Strike up the Band where you have to do something like ring a bell 19 times (for example) and it has to say something after every ring. Also Cookie adds occasional pauses on these games to make comments or “rest” for a few seconds…seriously…? It’s frustrating for the kids (especially on repeat plays) and impairs their attention span. Here’s a breakdown of the games if you want more detail:

ARCADE
1. Big Bird’s Bell – ring a bell a requested number of times. Kids can’t lose, they just hit the bell until it stops them and congratulates them after hitting the designated number.
2. Ring Toss – Identify and complete patterns – for instance there is a green ring, then purple, red, green, purple, red, green, purple…? and the child is supposed to select red.
3. Falling Cans – three sets of cans of varying quantities are set out, the child is asked to choose the one that has less than 3, or more than 5, etc.
4. Pond Scoop – scoop up an object that has a certain number written on it. Good for recognizing numbers, but the items drift across the screen one at a time and the child is supposed to click it right as it passes through a yellow circle. They may have to wait a bit for the right item and if they click after it passes through the circle, the next item is scooped. I don’t get this, seems it would make more sense to have multiple items on the screen and they can click on the one with the right number, and it shouldn’t have to be in the circle.

PETTING ZOO
1. Bunny Patterns – same pattern concept as Ring Toss.
2. Bad Donkey – repair holes in the fence of the horse pen by selecting a patch that matches the shape of the hole.

FOOD COURT
1. So Many Balloons – No real objective but it teaches relational concepts. Blows up several balloons by blowing into the mic, then Cookie says whether it’s larger, smaller, or the same size as the first balloon.
2. Fruit Shack – same concept as falling cans, but with two qualifiers (more than 3 AND less than 7).
3. Monster Seek – Look and Find meets prepositions – tap on a monster that is hiding among 5 pieces of playground equipment, then Big Bird says it was behind/under/next to the object.
4. Pretzel Party – select the pretzel in the requested shape out of three options. I wish you could just tap the right one but it makes the child wait until the shapes rotate through that pesky yellow circle.

MIDWAY
1. With the Band – same concept as Big Bird’s Bell.
2. Chill and Catch – same concept as Pond Scoop but with a number of objects instead of an object with a number…same annoying issue with the yellow circle.
3. Ferris Wheel – choose the basket of the requested shape and color, again the child must wait for it to rotate through the yellow circle.
4. Fill That Car – fill the cars by adding monsters, Cookie counts until the car is full. I wish it showed the numbers in addition to speaking them.

My 3 year old son loves this game. It uses the stylus and is easy for him to control. The stylus that comes with it is great too.
