This review is from: Brain Age: Concentration Training (Video Game) Honestly, there have been so many games that have defined the Nintendo DS for young and old gamers alike. Brain Age was definitely a game changer in 2005 when it came out. It started to show gamers could go for more of a mental-stimulating challenge that was worth the while. It also started to show that Nintendo was going to appeal to older gamers, by testing their memory and how well people can deal with everyday activities. The game started the ball for games like Big Brain Academy, and others to start showing that games can be stimulating and deliver a challenge that was more for fun and excitement. Well, with the Nintendo 3DS, the idea was to take it to another level. Well, they didn’t actually do it, but they did make a very exciting package. Brain Age: Concentration Training for the Nintendo 3DS, doesn’t add anything outrageous for new gamers to the addictive puzzling mental games from before, but stays very relevant to what made the game so strong in the first place, by making sure you stay sharp and swift on your mind. The game features challenges that make it worth the while. Graphically, you do not get much from the game, but a simple setup, where you have to score your way to the youngest brain age as possible. The control handles very well, as you have to be responsive and easy to master with each of the challenges. The game features mini-challenges that are returning from before like piano player, low to high, where you have to tap with your stylus pen as fast as possible the numbers from smallest to largest value, as well as classic games like calculations x 20 & 100 where you have memorize and rapidly answer basic math problems. There are some new challenges called devilish challenges to the mix here in the new Brain Age game. Although openly, it in not very amusing to see the doctor from before sprouted with devil horns. But the challenges are simple from devilish mice, where you have remember where mice are hiding behind a series of blocks, while they are being moved, devilish pairs, where you have memorize numbered cards and match ‘em up as quickly and sharply as possible and card games like Klondike and solitaire. While they don’t add much to the challenge, they are addictive. The good news about the game is that a couple of the titles from before were removed, which cause some poor problems from saying vocally the right colors, and the game wasn’t being recognized from them. However, there are still some disadvantages to the new Brain Age game. The first is that, there could’ve been more challenges to the mix to appeal for its price. While the game does offer new challenges, some of them have been used so much through the smartphones like solitaire and others, there could’ve been more. Also, some of the challenges are too easy for gamers that have played the Brain Age games before, like change maker and time lapse. There could’ve been a few new twists to those games, or more variety to the mix. Overall, what you still get with Brain Age: Concentration Training is a classic and addictive game, that keeps you coming back for more, to try and stimulate your mind, and spirit as well. While age isn’t certainly more than just a number, it still is a very challenging game that makes it worth your while. This is definitely worth checking out for die hard fans of the Brain Age games, or for those who are new to the game series and didn’t get the classic Brain Age games for the Nintendo DS. I loved the past titles, and this one does follow-up, what the games haven’t been able to do in quite awhile. I definitely like going back to these challenges, and you’ll love it as well. The focal point of the latest in Nintendo’s famous brain-training series is specifically designed to test–and strengthen–your focus and ability to concentrate, as well as to remember useful information on a short-term basis. The game refers to this as “working memory.” And right off the bat, you are thrown into the first exercise of the game’s core content: Devilish Training. Rather than simply ask you to do simple addition and subtraction problems (see the previous titles’ Calculations x 20), “Devilish Calculations” challenges you to remember the answers to previously-asked problems. First off, it asks you to remember the previous problem’s answer; then, the answers from two problems ago. Doing well? It’ll get harder. The speed increases. Then, you’ll have to remember three problems ago, which the game calls “3-Back.” Still doing well? Then, “4-Back.” Then, “5-Back.” Can you focus well enough to do this? How about for five solid minutes? Devilish Training actually offers eight separate exercises. They test your focus using your arithmetic skills (or lack thereof), your photographic memory, your ability to track movement, your ability to remember words or shapes, and quite a bit more. Each one of these exercises will continue to get harder as you succeed. You’ll eventually reach a point where you fail, and possibly even get demoted to a previous level. That’s okay, the game says, because Devilish Training is supposed to test you at your absolute limit. Your skills, it explains, won’t grow if you aren’t being tested at the limit of your ability! After 5 minutes go by and your current round ends, the exercise is suspended; you can continue on the following day from where you left off. Yes, the game will not let you continue any particular Devilish Training exercise until the next day. At first, this seems bizarre, especially towards the beginning, when most of the activities in the game are locked. However, the game explains later that according to studies, attempting to apply such strong focus for too long on a daily basis could result in *decreased* brain function! So, this limitation is intentional. Once you’ve unlocked all eight exercises, you can play each one of them once a day, at most. But take it from me: some of these exercises are tiring enough that you will most likely be perfectly happy limiting yourself. Your progress in Devilish Training is linked to a “Training Grade” that starts at F and improves as you progress through the various exercises. Once you’ve been working on a particular exercise for long enough, you will also find that your grade can go down if you get demoted in-exercise. Along with an in-game Awards system that functions similarly to Achievements or Trophies, this helps motivate you to try harder, even at the exercises you’re not so good at. (There are well over 100 Awards in all.) As you attempt all of the different Devilish Training exercises, you’ll begin to understand your mental strengths and weaknesses better, because of the fact that they test such varied sets of skills. You’ll also find that, once you get “stuck” at a particular level, that you may very well improve after repeated attempts. And what’s even better: because the skills needed to succeed at Devilish Training are practical skills you can apply to real life as well–remembering numbers! Remembering the positions of objects! Remembering words!–they *may* actually help you focus on such things more easily throughout your daily life. I’ve been waking up with Devilish Training for the past two weeks now. It’s one of the first things I’ve been doing, each and every morning. I haven’t had a moment yet where I went “oh! I don’t think I’d have remembered that if not for Devilish Training!” but I can say for certain that my brain is definitely more awake in the morning now than if I’d been just slogging through my bathroom routines like usual. And, maybe it’s just because I’m easily amused, but…I’m enjoying it greatly. I like the feeling of testing my mental limits. It really feels strenuous, like hard mental work, but at the same time, it’s a meaningless activity…so if I fail, it’s no big deal. However, the feeling of accomplishment when I figure out a better way to remember something–and the feeling of mental progress that comes with it–is most definitely real and rewarding, and is the best reason to buy Brain Age: Concentration Training. I am currently struggling with the “Fast 6-Back” level of Devilish Calculations, bouncing between that, “6-Back” and “Fast 5-Back” for over a week now. After all, I have always had trouble remembering more than 5 numbers at a time. But I have a feeling that this is going to help me, and that I will eventually break through to 7-Back!
