I bought this for my son’s birthday and he plays it almost every day still. He has even gotten my husband hooked on it. Only thing I wish these sports games would do, would they please just upgrade every year without having to buy a new one. I would pay for an upgrade fee to just download via wii internet.

Well, none of the rosters are updated. When attempting to do a Reds vs. Cardinals before looking through anything else in the game, I noticed Alonso was in the lineup! All the big name free agents are not assigned teams either. Took me about two hours to assign all the free agents and do the trades to actually play an accurate season.

Franchise mode is silly, teams make trades that don’t make sense (King Felix to Washington for one player that isn’t a big bat or starting pitcher).

Graphics are awful. Simple enough.

Game play is what saves this game, and that is only if you enjoy baseball. Overall, I wouldn’t buy this game or recommend someone to buy it. I know that it’s probably not developed well for the Wii compared to X-box, but when the Wii offers you the ability to use your body to play you would think the developers would make it more interesting versus just flicking your wrist to throw and hit.

Excellent Gameplay, Some Quirks, January 8, 2013
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

First of all, I am not going to praise nor complain about line-ups. I’ve not kept up with any sports line-ups in YEARS. My wife and I found this game at a local retailer, on clearance, and couldn’t pass it up for the price.

Pros:
* Excellent game-play for the most part. The controls take getting used to, b/c there are so many perhaps, and b/c some buttons can be used for 2 different functions, given different scenarios that can change rapidly. For example, batting vs a runner on base getting a lead-off. In a couple of games I’ve played, I’ve accidentally told my runner to take off running immediately after getting back to their base in a pick-off attempt. Obviously not a good move.
* Sound (except for music) – Commentators offer some good clean jokes amidst standard play calls, and some comments that might make the game feel more interesting than without. Crowd sounds and sound effects are also good.
* Options – Lots of options, haven’t tried all of them just yet
* Plenty of options for practically every setting in the game – gameplay, sound, viewing game, etc
* Taking full use of the Wii standard controllers (Wii Remote + Nunchuck)
* Playing as the Greats (although, I would have expected to be able to find some such as Shoeless Joe Jackson or Babe Ruth, or some others that aren’t on there. I didn’t even recognize most of the “greats”, though I’m not a baseball aficionado. It is nice that you start out with Nolan Ryan pitching on the National League Greats. I know my son LOVED pitching with Ryan.

Cons:
* Music – I realize many people like “popular” music, and thus it’s called popular. However, I hate that it plays throughout the whole game unless you change the settings.
* Bad part about settings? You have to save the settings in its own settinsg file, separate from the default profile (unless someone can tell me otherwise). So when the game first starts, if you want the same general settings, you have to go through a couple of menus, and select the correct file to load (make sure you name the appropriately also, b/c the different file types aren’t always as obvious as you might expect). I created a settings file called “NoMusic”, so at least we can change the sound settings a LITTLE bit faster than going through the various settings. Hint here for anyone wanting the same thing: The Menu Music and Game Music are separate menu options, but same music selections.
* Confusing on how to save franchise/season modes (at least it was for me)
* Graphics (this may be a limitation on the Wii, but I can’t help but think it could have been better from other games I’ve seen). Compared with the other modern consoles, the graphics are definitely sub-par. They aren’t absolutely horrible, but they could definitely be better.
* Team/Player info: There is a lot of information available, but it seems there are times when you have to fly blind. For instance, if the season has started, you can’t easily see the “real” stats – in other words previous season stats – nor quality numbers for any players. So you could see a low-level player that looks good b/c they happened to have a good first game, or a high-level player that looks horrible b/c they started out in a slump. It’d be nice to be able to see more info in such places as trading, line-ups, etc. Maybe I just overlooked it?
* Documentation: Practically doesn’t exist. The player manual is a joke for a game that has so many details. There is no better documentation provided by the manufacturer than the user manual, either, at least not that I could find. It would be nice if they had a VERY BASIC walkthrough of setting up and starting each type of game, as well as examples of what controls to use when… well, that’d be in a perfect world, I imagine. Honestly, it’s pretty often I don’t even read a manual for a game, but it would have been a big help on this game.
* Intro Screens: I wouldn’t mind if I could quickly click through the intro screens, but you’re forced to sit through I forget – something like 6 or 7 intro screens, each 3 to 5 seconds each, minimum, before you can do a thing. Usually when we first get a game, I’ll let whatever intro items may exist, but once you’ve played a time or two, it’d be nice to skip 15 to 30 seconds of just waiting, watching items that really don’t say or do much.

Other thoughts:
* How to save a franchise/season:
1. Get your game mode started – franchise, season (others are the same, I would imagine)
2. Once you have it started the way you want, before you do anything, go to the top right option (I forget the name, but it’s “My SOMETHING” – I just can’t remember the something part).
3. In there, go to Load/Save
4. Create a new Save File, and name it something that will tell you it’s a franchise, for sure, with whatever other characters you choose. Hint: If you are likely only to play…
